Declining a Job Offer

Have you been offered a job? Do you want to decline the offer but are not sure of how to write an appropriate letter?

This will help you write a courteous letter informing the company of your decision.

Guidelines for writing letters declining job offers:

Start your letter by simply thanking the company for the job offer. Keep the letter as brief as possible, and do not go overboard with gratitude.
State that you have decided not to accept the job, without criticizing either the job or the company that offered it.
Keep in mind that you may some day apply for another job with the same company, or have professional contact with the people who interviewed you. Be courteous, and avoid burning bridges!

Thank you for the generous job offer in the computer programming department at AHA. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and your staff, however, I have decided to accept a position out of state and will not be joining your company. It was a very difficult decision for me to make. Thank you for understanding. I do hope that our paths cross again in the future.
